Learn to do a handstand with confidence through proper joint and core training

What will you learn?

Catered to those who just got started, or intends to get started in handstand training, or some may call it hand balancing. This class will be intense, with focus on how to properly load your joints and link your kinetic chain, aka your core, as you develop your handstand balance.

If you are wondering where you can learn beginner handstand workouts, or different kinds of handstands, this is the class to begin that journey. Calisthenics enthusiasts may also find this class useful.

This class covers:

1. How to safely enter into a handstand

Progressive exercises will be introduced to slowly get you into a handstand steadily, and safely.

2. How to safely fall from a handstand

Know how to fall greatly increases your confidence in staying upside down, and develops your balance.

3. How to hold your handstand

You will develop muscular control over your handstands, instead of simply loading into your joints. As you get more comfortable, we may explore different types of handstands as well.

Why learn Handstands?

1. It develops your joint integrity and strength, as well as coordination throughout your body.

Every joint you use will be more capable. And with better body coordination, all these gains indirectly improve your day-to-day movement in your life.

2. It develops your body awareness that will benefit you holistically

Learning handstands concurrently with other physical disciplines allows you to apply transferrable skills. At the end of the day, you get more holistic benefits across all your skills, including parkour, gymnastics, cartwheels and calisthenics.

3. It is the entry skill into bodyweight strength movement

It develops your sense of centre in your body, thus allowing you to understand how to work your body with gravity.

Term Class

  • Who can attend: Suitable for everyone age 16 and above, who are interested to start their handstand journey. Do let the coach know of any notable pre-existing conditions before the term begins.
    • Prerequisite: Zero experience required.
    • Sundays, 9.30am to 10.45am

About Coach Jay

Coming from a background as a competitive athlete, Jay believes that when a person finds a physical discipline they enjoy, being fit becomes a welcomed “side effect”. Having step foot in a wide range of disciplines, he is able to draw relations to the problems faced by his students and teach them accordingly. He gets his ecstasy when he sees people having their breakthrough.
Not one to simply teach, for the student to achieve the physical movement itself, he pays attention to the mental aspect of training greatly, because like ‘strength’, ’flexibility’, ‘mobility’ or any other physical abilities, ‘confidence’ can be trained progressively.

Having a combat martial arts background, his learning from Gymnastics as an adult, together with some dabbling in Parkour, gives Jay a very hands-on knowledge of the movement mechanics of the human body, and how to apply proper (and not fancy) conditioning/drill to best serve the needs of the student, which is unable to be taught via theories alone.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Jay also likes to explore other disciplines to supplement his trade. So while his expertise lies in teaching gymnastics and bodyweight movements, the knowledge from other disciplines gives him tools to see the bigger picture.

Jay strongly advocates teaching a student at the pace they should be learning at. That way, they can progress to become a better and independent learner.
